We take anxious patients very seriously Our goal at The Bright Side in London is to calm the nervous and anxious patient by carefully explaining the treatment and then performing it in a measured way. Teeth whitening and oral hygiene treatments such as scaling and cleaning are simple procedures. However they can still evoke a fearful response, which must be handled with patience and understanding.
Relaxing with ‘Happy Gas' In dentistry, an excellent technique for soothing nerves is the use of inhalation sedation, popularly known as ‘Relaxation or Happy Gas'. This is so safe that even women in labour use it. You breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (measured specifically for you)…through a small loosely fitting nosepiece. The oxygen content is higher than normal so the body gets more than enough oxygen.
The effect is a feeling of floating and detached well-being (although you can still talk and hear what the dentist is saying). As you are being given oral hygiene or dental restoration treatment, you never lose consciousness or control. At the end of the dental session, 100% oxygen is administered for about one minute. After that you return fully to your normal state of awareness and are ready to resume work, if you wish.
Helping the ‘gagging' patient Nitrous oxide/Oxygen also reduces the ‘gag reflex' in those patients who cannot stand having something in the back of their mouth. It will often permit even simple procedures like taking x-rays or dental hygiene (tooth scaling and cleaning) to be completed without difficulty.
